Liverpool star Emre Can comments on rejecting Pep Guardiola

Liverpool ace has no regrets about turning down the chance to work under Pep Guardiola.

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has told German outlet Sport1 he has no regrets after rejecting the chance to work with Pep Guardiola.

Can made the bold decision to quit Bayern Munich in 2013 shortly after Guardiola was appointed.

He chose to sign with Bayer Leverkusen, a move widely seen as a step down, but it was one which allowed him to play regularly and earn a move to Liverpool.

Can is now opposing Guardiola’s City in next month’s Champions League quarter-finals, having helped Liverpool to a 4-3 win over them at Anfield in January.

He is adamant that snubbing Guardiola was the right move.

Can was asked if he regretted the move and responded confidently: “No, definitely not. Today you can see that it was just the right decision.

“I was very young and it was important for me to play a lot. He also told me honestly: I can not guarantee you now that you will play every week. Then I saw the opportunity in Leverkusen. They also played Champions League.

“For many it was a step backwards. But for me it was a step forward because I always played in Leverkusen. Today you can see that it has paid off in any case.”

Can did not offer any clues as to his future, regarding his contract which expires in June.

He did say that he feels to improve he must add more goals to his game, despite managing to net six so far this season for the Reds.

He said: “It’s true that defending is my main task. But I have the feeling that I can do more shooting at goal. So I can help the team even more.”
