Manchester City were leading the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz – but Liverpool are now changing the picture.

Liverpool may now push to beat Manchester City in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz.

That is according to The Sunday Mirror (05/11, p70), who claim that Liverpool are looking to land Wirtz.

The 20-year-old has been in sensational form this season with six goals and nine assists in just 15 games.

Wirtz has battle back from injury hell in recent times and is now showing his star power once again.

Liverpool challenging Manchester City for Florian Wirtz

The Sunday Mirror (05/11, p70) now claim that Liverpool are joining the race to land Wirtz in 2024.

It’s stated that Bayern Munich and Manchester City appeared to be leading the race to sign Wirtz for around £80million next summer.

However, Liverpool ramping up their interest has ‘altered the picture’ with the Reds now a serious contender to sign the German.

The report claims that Jurgen Klopp’s contacts over in Germany make Liverpool a very genuine threat in this transfer race.

Klopp is thought to be a ‘huge admirer’ of Wirtz and will now hope that the lure of a move to Anfield can leave City empty-handed.

Where would Wirtz fit in for Liverpool?

Liverpool will be assessing several attacking targets with Mohamed Salah potentially on his way out in 2024.

Saudi Arabian interest in Salah remains and the time may be right for him to go in a big-money move.

Wirtz is more of an attacking midfielder though and utilising him on the right wing in place of Salah would be a little surprising.

Liverpool going for another central attacking midfield player doesn’t really add up either as Klopp already has Dominik Szoboszlai, who has been outstanding this season.

Hailed as ‘extraordinary’ by Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Wirtz is one of Europe’s top young players but a move to Anfield would surprise us.
