Liverpool want Sofyan Amrabat and it seems that Julian Ward is the man driving this interest in the Fiorentina and Morocco midfielder.

That’s according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, who claims that Liverpool’s sporting director Ward is a huge fan of Amrabat.

Plettenberg claims that there have been talks with Liverpool as they seek to bring Amrabat to the Premier League.

Fiorentina don’t want to sell Amrabat in January but the midfielder is keen to leave by the summer at the absolute latest.

Amrabat seemingly sees this as his big chance to make a move to a Premier League giant and doesn’t want to miss it.

Liverpool target Amrabat has excelled at the World Cup

The World Cup in Qatar has been perfect for Amrabat, making himself a star on the biggest stage.

Amrabat has been the heartbeat of the Morocco midfield at the World Cup, proving to be a defensive machine in front of the defence.

The 26-year-old was simply incredible against Spain in midweek, helping Morocco reach the quarter-finals against all odds.

Pundit Joe Cole told ITV Sport (06/12, 3:54pm) suggested that Amrabat was ‘excellent’ whilst dealing with Barcelona wonderkids Gavi and Pedri in that game.

It seems that Ward has been tracking Amrabat for longer than just the World Cup though and is the key figure driving the Reds’ interest.

This is interesting though as Ward is actually leaving Liverpool at the end of the season having only taken over from Michael Edwards during the summer.

Ward wouldn’t be pushing this hard to sign a player off just his own judgment and will surely have the backing of boss Jurgen Klopp too.

It has become clear this season that Liverpool do need another enforcer to compete with Fabinho, who hasn’t really been at his best.

Amrabat fits that bill perfectly and it will now be down to Ward to try and convince Fiorentina to accept a January deal after all.
