Liverpool will have hoped to have celebrated winning the Premier League title by now, but that hasn’t materialised.
The global pandemic means that football has been suspended for more than two months now, with some leagues deciding to end their seasons early.
The Premier League may still return behind closed doors next month, and Liverpool would then close in on the title once again.
Jurgen Klopp may already be looking at how to go again next season, though his budget will have been impacted by the global pandemic.
Liverpool may look to free agents, and Le10 Sport claim that the Reds have contacted Thomas Meunier. The Paris Saint-Germain defender is out of contract this summer, and Liverpool allegedly want him on a free transfer.
However, this move makes very little sense. For one thing, Meunier is set to turn 29 later this year, and doesn’t really fit the age profile Liverpool look for under Klopp and Michael Edwards.
Meunier would command considerable wages, and all to sit behind Trent Alexander-Arnold. Yes, he’d offer great, experienced cover, but he would have little chance of usurping Alexander-Arnold.
Neco Williams is another factor. The young Welshman has impressed in limited playing time this season, and signing Meunier would merely place another block in the way of his development.
The Standard even reported earlier this week that Klopp has no plans to sign another right back. He allegedly doesn’t want to halt Williams’ development, so a deal for Meunier seems very unlikely.
This story smacks of an agent attempting to drum up interest in Meunier, whilst realising that free agents will be in high demand this summer. Throwing Liverpool’s name into the mix does just that, but a move would be truly bizarre.
