Liverpool look set to make Calvin Ramsay their final signing of the summer transfer window, and the ‘elite’ defender’s arrival should see the Reds well-stocked in almost every position.
Indeed, from Caoimhin Kelleher to Kostas Tsimikas, Liverpool now have competent backups in almost every position, but in some roles, they’re overstocked.
With Ramsay arriving, Liverpool, quite simply, have an abundance of right-backs.
As we all know, Trent Alexander-Arnold is, and probably always will be for as long as he’s at the club, the Reds’ first-choice, but the Reds’ options behind him may now be; Ramsay, Joe Gomez, Neco Williams and Conor Bradley.
Simply put, that’s too many players who can play at right-back within one squad.
So, the logical move would be for Liverpool to move one of these players on, and sadly, there is a prime candidate for the chop.
Unfortunately for Neco Williams, Ramsay’s arrival may be the final nail in his Liverpool coffin.
Williams already had one foot out of Anfield after spending last season out on loan at Fulham, and with both the Cottagers and Nottingham Forest interested, it’s fair to say that he has plenty of suitors away from Anfield.
Williams had hoped to break into the Liverpool first-team eventually, but chances have become more and more scarce, and with Ramsay now likely to be ahead of him in the pecking order, the ‘outstanding’ player may be on his way.
Williams should carve out a solid career wherever he goes, but sadly, it looks like he may well have played his final game for the Reds.
Football can be a cutthroat business, and while Williams hasn’t done anything wrong, it’s now probably time for him to move on.
