The 17-year-old confirmed the news on his Twitter page, expressing his delight and turning pro after several years in the club’s academy.
Whelan has been a regular for Liverpool’s under-18 side, featuring in the FA Youth Cup.
He has even recently stepped up to playing under-21 football, making eight appearances at that level this season, and the picture above shows him taking on Manchester United’s Donald Love in a clash last week, with the Red Devils defender recently playing for their first team.
Whelan is a defender who can play at centre-back or right-back. He is a Republic of Ireland international, and is 18-years-old.
He began his football with Crewe Alexandra before joining Liverpool’s under-10s team and working his way up.
