If Liverpool have the opportunity to sign Luke Shaw from Manchester United they should grab it with both hands.

If the Metro is to be believed then Manchester United’s Europa League triumph over Ajax will signal the end of Luke Shaw’s career at Old Trafford.

Apparently, with the ability to now offer Champions League football for next season, Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho believes he can attract a better calibre of left-back to Shaw – a player he has routinely criticised this term.

If the 21-year-old is available then according to the Daily Star, that will prick the interest of Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

If Spurs keep hold of Danny Rose then a switch to North London seems unlikely, even if it was Mauricio Pochettino who brought Shaw into the first team at Southampton.

That would leave Mourinho in something of a quandary, with the two remaining options both title and local rivals, but the Reds should push their case.

Liverpool have progressed well under Juergen Klopp, securing Champions League football for next season and also some great results against some of the Premier League’s strongest teams.

However, defence has been an issue, particularly at left-back. They have conceded more goals than the rest of the top six bar Arsenal, and James Milner has been required to fill in on the left side of defence with Alberto Moreno seemingly not up to the required standard.

Shaw was once rated as one of the brightest, young talents in European football and was named in the 2013/14 PFA Team of the Year. Despite injuries and a lack of faith from Mourinho since then he is still just 21 and already has 97 Premier League appearances to his name.

There might not be quite the hype surrounding Shaw anymore but that could be a blessing in disguise for Liverpool, who might be able to sign a potentially world-class player from one of their direct rivals and in the process make it a decision United will come to truly regret.
