It may now be easier for Liverpool to sign the American in the summer, and they should move quickly to get a deal done.
Christian Pulisic has long been linked with a move to join former manager Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, with the Independent reporting in January that the Anfield club will battle rivals Manchester United for his signature.
But the United States international’s stock has fallen a little since the transfer window closed, having missed out on being in the starting line-up in consecutive Bundesliga games and played less than an hour in the Europa League fixture in between.
This has been an unexpected hurdle for Pulisic, who had started the season as Dortmund’s star attacker.
It seems that Peter Bosz’s departure has contributed to the winger’s struggles, with Peter Stoger preferring a more defensive approach that leaves no room for the speedy Pennsylvanian.
However, it is this change in style that should give Liverpool an advantage in the summer and must not put Jurgen Klopp off.
The Reds – unlike Man United – play an exciting, expansive brand of football under Klopp, one that would very much be suited to Pulisic, giving them the edge in the transfer market.
Pulisic’s current struggles should certainly not impact Liverpool’s long-standing interest.
It is clear that he needs a coach who believes in him and, after all, the 19-year-old has a long career ahead of him in which to recover from a minor setback.
Klopp can help the American to get back on track and it could even be that Stoger’s indifference to the Dortmund man works in Liverpool’s favour, allowing them to more easily wrestle him away from Signal Iduna Park.
With Philippe Coutinho gone, Pulisic is exactly the type of player that could fit into the Liverpool side.
