Owen Hargreaves thinks Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are missing a ‘defensive’ midfielder in order to win the Premier League title.

The name of Manchester City’s Treble winner Rodri was dropped into the hat by Owen Hargreaves as a player who is needed at Anfield.

The former Bayern Munich star is certain that Liverpool are contenders for the Premier League title after their 1-1 draw at the Etihad on Saturday – Nathan Ake lauded Mohamed Salah after the match.

Part of the midfield at the weekend was the ever-popular Dominik Szoboszlai, who Owen Hargreaves says is ‘great’ and he ‘absolutely loves’, as he told Premier League Productions (27/11/23 at 5:05 pm). 

But he is more of a number eight, a power runner from deep and someone who can contribute to goals.

If that bonafide defensive brain is added next to him, plus allowing Alexis Mac Allister to push further forward, then things could become very interesting for Liverpool.

Liverpool need a Rodri-type 

“They are definitely contenders,” said Hargreaves. “One thing I will say, they still do need one more central midfield player. A defensive one.

“I think the midfield three they have is good. Szoboszlai has been great. I absolutely love him.

“But you need a Rodri type for a Liverpool team. I think if they can get that, then I do think they can potentially compete and win the trophy.”

Will Liverpool do any transfer business in January?

The powers that be at Anfield aren’t known to splash the cash or spend like crazy, that’s why they might not spend in January.

The Reds have many options in the middle of the park, but it’s clear as day that Fabinho still hasn’t been replaced.

Liverpool have proven before, with the purchases of Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, how those much-needed holes being plugged can lead to such glory.

Perhaps the fans will have to wait until the summer before that player arrives.

But, before then, Liverpool are in the title race, they are improving, Salah is playing his best football, it’s just a case of the defence being able to deliver.
