Liverpool have sold Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich in a move that has left Michael Owen absolutely baffled.

Mane has spent six years with Liverpool having arrived from Southampton way back in the summer of 2016.

The Senegalese forward racked up 120 goals and 48 assists in 269 appearances for the Reds.

With his contract set to expire next summer, Mane decided that he wanted to leave Liverpool now.

Liverpool landed a replacement in Darwin Nunez and have now confirmed that Mane has left the club.

Liverpool have sold Sadio Mane

Mane has been sold to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in a deal believed to be worth around £35million.

Rather than allow Mane to leave for nothing next summer, Liverpool have cashed in now on the 30-year-old.

After eight years in the Premier League, Mane will now try something new with a trip to the Bundesliga.

As a former Red Bull Salzburg star, moving to Munich – just an hour and a half away from Salzburg – will have absolutely appealed to Mane.

The deal is done and Mane’s Liverpool career is over in a decision that is somewhat dividing opinion.

Mane was at the top of his game in the second half of last season, terrorising Premier League defences.

There are people who now feel that Mane is taking a step down by heading to Bayern, who generally walk to the Bundesliga title.

Bayern’s title push next season is unlikely to be as enthralling as Liverpool’s battles with Manchester City, but Mane will hope for European success too.

Mane’s decision has now been questioned by ex-Liverpool striker and current pundit Michael Owen.

Owen has taken to Twitter to admit that he is ‘struggling to understand’ why Mane has swapped Liverpool for Bayern.

Owen did hail Mane as an ‘outstanding’ player but seemingly thinks he is making a mistake by leaving Anfield at the peak of his powers.
