Liverpool want Ron-Robert Zieler and a deal for the Hannover goalkeeper is appealing because of his homegrown status from his Manchester United days.

The Reds are facing a huge 2023.

It sounds like FSG are now willing to sell the club and fans will be worried about the club’s transfer budget moving forward.

Liverpool need to re-tool their midfield but may also be in the market for another goalkeeper.

Alisson is as solid as they come but Caoimhin Kelleher has suffered injury blows and may even fancy trying to leave for first-team action.

Adrian is out of contract at the end of the season and Liverpool may look to add another stopper to compete with Alisson.

Liverpool want Ron-Robert Zieler

One surprise rumour emerged last week as Sandhausen stopper Patrick Drewes was linked with a move to Anfield.

Another German goalkeeper now in the mix with Hannover stopper Ron-Robert Zieler thought to be on Liverpool’s radar.

Bild claim that Liverpool are interested in Zieler and he has one key advantage over Drewes.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper would count as a homegrown player and therefore wouldn’t take up the spot of a foreign player in Liverpool’s squad.

Zieler was born in Germany but joined Manchester United as a teenager and stayed with the club from 2005 to 2010.

That means Zieler counts as a homegrown player and that will be very appealing to Liverpool.

Signing Drewes would take up a non-homegrown spot and using those on backup goalkeepers just feels like a real waste.

That’s ultimately why so many clubs in the Premier League now have English backup goalkeepers.

Fraser Forster, Tom Heaton and Marcus Bettinelli spring to mind with clubs preferring to use their non-homegrown spots on first-team players.

Zieler may be a German World Cup winner but it’s his homegrown status that may just tempt the Reds into making a move for the former United goalkeeper.

Zieler has also had another stint in England with Leicester City, who pounced to sign him after being hailed as ‘sensational’ by former Hanover boss Mirko Slomka.

It’s not often you see former Manchester United players turning out for Liverpool but Zieler may well do just that in 2023.
