The Reds headed to Italy seeking a positive first leg of their last 16 clash against Inter.
Having beaten AC Milan twice earlier this season, Liverpool will have been confident of picking up another result in Italy.
It took a while to come, but Liverpool did go ahead as Firmino glanced an Andrew Robertson corner into the net.
Mohamed Salah sealed the win with a left-footed finish, meaning Liverpool already have one foot in the last eight of the Champions League.
This was a great moment for Firmino, who would be forgiven for feeling a little frustrated of late.
The Brazilian striker hasn’t scored a Premier League goal since firing a hat-trick against Watford back in October.
Even with more playing time of late because of Sadio Mane and Salah being at the Africa Cup of Nations, Firmino hasn’t found goals easy to come by.
Once vital to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side, Firmino has been in Diogo Jota’s shadow for a while now. Firmino’s importance has been dwindling, but he reminded fans of his class against Inter.
Firmino got the perfect weight and direction on his header, leaving Samir Handanovic with no chance in the Inter goal.
With Jota now nursing an injury, Firmino could be given the nod in the heart of the Liverpool attack in the coming weeks.
Pundit and Arsenal legend Ian Wright has taken to Twitter to bring up an old tweet of his about Liverpool ace Firmino.
Back in 2019, Wright praised Firmino for a ‘genius touch’ in a 3-1 win over Newcastle United whilst simply saying ‘what a player’.
On Wednesday night, Wright brought that tweet back up, suggesting that Firmino was at it again with his lovely goal against Inter.
Hopefully, this sparks more confidence and more goals for Firmino in the coming weeks.
