Liverpool reportedly want new title winner Edwards tried to sign even before Van Dijk

It looks like Stefan de Vrij might be on Liverpool’s radar this summer.

The Inter Milan centre-back has just won a Serie A title in Italy and according to FC Inter News, Liverpool have touched base with super agent Mino Raiola over bringing him to Anfield.

And interestingly, this isn’t the first time that the Reds have wanted the Netherlands international.

Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for De Vrij back in the summer of 2017 and reportedly had a bid rejected by Lazio, who had the player at the time.

And the interesting thing here is that if true, De Vrij – who earns £124,000 per week in Italy – was a target for the Reds’ director of football Michael Edwards even before Virgil van Dijk.

Edwards didn’t wind up signing Van Dijk until the following January after the De Vrij links, for a club record £75 million.

Do Liverpool need De Vrij?

Well, they definitely need central defenders.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have endured a rotten, trophy-less season and one that may not even yield a Champions League qualification spot.

And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that a horrendous injury crisis of centre-back options is the prime reason behind their shocker of a campaign.

But with Ibrahima Konate reportedly a done deal, and Ozan Kabak said to be joining Liverpool on a permanent basis, it doesn’t leave much room for the Dutchman, considering Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip – who has been linked with a move away – will all be fit next term.
