Liverpool look set to miss out on Dayot Upamecano, who is joining Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig.

Fabrizio Romano reported in The Guardian on Friday that Liverpool and Chelsea are interested in signing Upamecano from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021.

The well-known and well-respected journalist claimed that Upamecano has a release clause of €42.5 million (£37.18 million).

Romano made a similar claim on his Twitter page, but it seems that the 22-year-old central defender is moving to Bayern instead.

Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has told Bild that the club have reached an agreement with the 22-year-old France international centre-back.

Salihamidzic told Bild: “I can do that (confirm the deal), and we are very happy about that at Bayern. We had very good, intensive and professional discussions with Dayot and his advisor Volker Struth for many months.

“We knew we had very tough competition. Upamecano is a young player, 22, whose qualities are already exceptionally developed. I was always convinced that we came up with a good concept.

“We presented him with our vision of his career at Bayern. During the past week in Doha, I spoke to everyone involved again. At the end of a long process, the players, family and management were convinced that FC Bayern was the right partner.”

Bad news for Liverpool?

Liverpool signed two central defenders on transfer deadline day. Ben Davies joined from Preston North End, while Ozan Kabak moves on loan from Schalke.

While Davies has played his entire career in the Championship, Kabak’s parent club Schalke could end up in the second division of Germany at the end of the season.

Upamecano is a very talented and promising young defender who would have been a brilliant signing for Liverpool in the long run, but it seems that it is Bayern who are getting him.
