Liverpool made a January approach to sign Josko Gvardiol but couldn’t convince RB Leipzig to sell their star defender.
That’s according to new claims from Fabrizio Romano, who suggests that Liverpool asked what it would take to sign Gvardiol.
Liverpool quickly found out that a deal for Gvardiol was ‘almost impossible’ and no deal was done.
Still, Romano notes that Liverpool are interested in snapping up Gvardiol ahead of the summer transfer window.
‘From what I understand, Liverpool approached Leipzig in January to understand the conditions of the deal and it was almost impossible to sign Gvardiol in January,” said Romano. “But Liverpool have an interest in Josko Gvardiol, he is a player they appreciate,” he added.
Romano adds that Chelsea and Manchester City are also interested in Gvardiol as they consider defensive signings.
The clubs in the race for Gvardiol sound really similar to those chasing Jude Bellingham.
Signing both will be tricky but the Croatian would be something of a dream defensive addition for the Reds.
Josko Gvardiol already loves Liverpool
Liverpool may well fancy their chances of winning the race given that Gvardiol loves Liverpool.
Gvardiol admitted in January that Liverpool would be his ‘dream’ move having grown up supporting the Reds alongside his father.
If the Reds come calling, Gvardiol would surely be tempted to make the move to Anfield.
Italian reporter Rudy Galetti claimed in February that there are ‘more and more’ noises that Liverpool will go big for Gvardiol.
A fee of around £80million was mentioned with Leipzig commanding a huge price for the defender.
A quick and powerful defender who has shown great quality with the ball at his feet too, Gvardiol looks to be the ideal left-sided centre back.
That specific position appears to be a key focus for Liverpool ahead of the summer transfer window.
Gvardiol is the top target, as seen with that January attempt, but finding money for him and Bellingham will be difficult.
Champions League football would help Liverpool’s cause and Jurgen Klopp may push for Gvardiol and Bellingham to spearhead a new-look Reds side.
