Liverpool are said to be massive admirers of Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk.

Southampton's Virgil van Dijk heads clear

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Liverpool are prepared to break their transfer record to sign Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk this summer.

Van Dijk is believed to be near the top of Jurgen Klopp’s wishlist, as he looks to improve Liverpool’s defence.

The Reds have been short of options at centre-back this season, with doubts lingering over many of their current defenders.

Dejan Lovren is not a particularly popular figure at Anfield, while Ragnar Klavan will surely not be a regular starter again next term and Mamadou Sakho is set to be offloaded.

Liverpool, therefore, have made adding a new centre-back one of their priorities, and Van Dijk is believed to be their first choice.

Southampton are keen to keep hold of the Dutch international, but realise that they are likely to be fighting a losing battle.

Southampton's Virgil van Dijk reacts

Van Dijk has attracted the attentions of many of the Premier League’s leading clubs, after a brilliant season at St. Mary’s.

And Liverpool are now said to be so determined to land Van Dijk that they will break their transfer record to bring him to Merseyside.

The current highest fee that Liverpool have ever paid is £38.5 million for Sadio Mane, who arrived from Southampton last summer.
