Liverpool plot January move for West Ham star; why he would be wise to reject them

West Ham United striker Diafra Sakho is reportedly a Liverpool target in January.

Liverpool are looking into the possibility of singing West Ham United forward Diafra Sakho in January, according to a report in The Daily Mail.

The Reds are aiming to add to their attacking quality by bringing in the Frenchman and have sent scouts to watch Sakho, who has impressed since his move to England in the summer.

Sakho was signed by Sam Allardyce from French club Metz, and he has become one of the bargain buys of the summer.

Few knew much about the powerful forward when he arrived in England, but he has wasted no time in making a name for himself.

Sakho has scored eight goals in his first 10 appearances for the Hammers and Brendan Rodgers has already seen enough to convince him to try and take him to Anfield.

It would be a foolish move for the 24-year-old to make at this stage of his career, though, for a number of reasons.

Sakho has established himself in the Hammers starting line-up, but there would be no guarantee of first-team football at Anfield.

Although the Reds have a struggling set of strikers at the moment, Daniel Sturridge is due to return in the New Year and he is the main man at Anfield now, in a forward sense.

It means that Sakho would be competing for a supporting role, with Rickie Lambert, Fabio Borini and Mario Balotelli all vying for the same spot.

This is also still a transitional period for the striker and he would be under immediate pressure if he was to move to Merseyside.

Liverpool’s poor form has created an atmosphere of frustration around Anfield, which is completely different to the positivity at the Boleyn Ground at the moment.

Sakho, if he did sign, would need to find form immediately and it seems that the step-up could be too much for a man who was playing football in the French second tier only six months ago.

There is also the fact that West Ham look better placed than Liverpool to challenge for the European places, as things stand.

The Hammers have already established a six point lead over Rodgers’s men, and they will be looking to protect this lead as the season progresses.

Crucial to this will be Sakho’s form, and the frontman would be unwise to risk leaving a club, where he has already endeared himself to the supporters, and which seem to be going in an upward direction, to join one who look to be struggling to find any sort of form.
