Liverpool slipped to another defeat this afternoon, but how did Brendan Rodgers’ side fare in their 2-1 loss to Chelsea?
Simon Mignolet 5 – could’ve dealt with the second goal better, but made some decent saves – yet many people will remember his comical goal kick in the final seconds to end the game.
Glen Johnson 5 – horrendously out of position for the winning goal and too ponderous and profligate in possession.
Martin Skrtel 6 – his battle with Diego Costa from the Spain-Slovakia game continued today, and he fought well but looked uncomfortable with the ball at his feet at times.
Dejan Lovren 5 – poor performances continue for Lovren, with his positioning remaining an issue in defence. Kolo Toure deserves a start after his display against Real Madrid.
Alberto Moreno 6 – supported the attack well but completely lost his man from the corner in the first goal and couldn’t clear the danger from the winner.
Steven Gerrard 5 – unlucky to miss out on a late penalty, but it’s clear that he’s a spent force. Can’t get around the pitch as much anymore and his passing is eroding.
Emre Can 7 – opened the scoring with a deflected shot, and was energetic throughout, contributing in attack and defence in a promising display.
Jordan Henderson 5 – usually a key part of the Liverpool midfield, Henderson struggled to really get involved in the game, mostly passing the ball backwards rather than forward.
Philippe Coutinho 7 – impressed in the first half with direct running, skills and dangerous play in the final third, but is often caught out defensively – as he did with the winning goal.
Raheem Sterling 6 – was bright and tried to get involved but looked a little uncomfortable out wide, preferring to cut inside rather than take players on – may be better behind the strikers.
Mario Balotelli 6 – still completely maddening. One second he will make a great run or hold the ball up, the next he will misplace a five yard pass or give possession away with a needless flick. Has played worse, but still not offering enough.
Subs:
Joe Allen 6 – was only on the pitch for 20 minutes, but didn’t get on the ball enough.
Fabio Borini 6 – had a couple of encouraging runs but couldn’t get Liverpool back into the game.
Rickie Lambert 5 – thrown on as an impact player, Lambert touched the ball only six times in an ineffectual display.
