Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk has told The Mirror that Manchester City and Chelsea wanted to sign him.

Van Dijk has said that before he moved to Liverpool from Southampton, City manager Pep Guardiola as well as Chelsea wanted to secure his services.

As reported by The Mirror, the Netherlands international central defender joined the Reds from the Saints in January 2018 for a transfer fee of £75 million.

The 28-year-old former Celtic star has explained why he decided to chose Liverpool over the Citizens and the Blues.

Van Dijk told The Mirror: “I had the chance to go to Chelsea and Man City. When you compare the clubs, you look at the history, the town, the current squad, their plans for the near future.

“But the most important thing you look at is the manager – and Jurgen Klopp is an important reason why I chose for Liverpool.”

Brilliant signing for Liverpool

Van Dijk has been a stunning signing for Liverpool and is a world-class central defender.

The Dutchman was an instrumental figure in the Reds winning the Champions League last season and played a key role in the Merseyside outfit clinching in the Premier League title this campaign.

The 28-year-old is at his prime, and Liverpool’s gain has been City and Chelsea’s loss.

With Van Dijk at the top of his game, the Reds will be looking to win the Premier League and the Champions League next season.
