Phil Thompson has suggested to The Liverpool Echo that Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders could eventually succeed Jurgen Klopp as the Anfield boss.

The Liverpool legend and former Sky Sports pundit believes that Lijnders would be a good managerial appointment for Liverpool when Klopp eventually leaves.

Thompson has also named Liverpool legend and Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard as a top candidate to succeed Klopp at Anfield.

Pepijn Lijnders to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool?

The pundit told The Liverpool Echo: “But I would also like to put Pep Lijnders’ name in there as well. He shouldn’t be discounted when it happens.

“Yes, if Steven comes I would be delighted, but if Pep Lijnders was to take it then he would get Jurgen’s blessing.

“I would do that because you see he has got that fiery character the way Jurgen can be. He is also a very good coach.

“So there is good possibilities there. But Steven has done himself no harm, he’s moved from Rangers to Villa to test himself. I think he is doing that because listen, not everything is ever going to run smoothly no matter what football club you are at.”

Good shout

In our opinion, it would not be a bad decision from Liverpool to appoint Lijnders as the manager when Klopp leaves.

We know that the German is not going to be at Liverpool forever.

Now, a lot of Liverpool fans would love Gerrard to take charge.

After all, the former England international midfielder is a Liverpool legend who won the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers and is doing well at Villa.

However, in our view, Lijnders has to be part of the conversation.

The 39-year-old Dutchman has been working under Klopp for a while now and knows the current system inside out.

Lijnders is also a very good coach.
