Liverpool seemingly won’t be signing goalkeeper Patrick Drewes after the goalkeeper signed a new contract with German side Sandhausen.

Reds fans would be forgiven for feeling a little baffled when links to Drewes first emerged.

Drewes isn’t exactly a big name over in Germany and few Liverpool fans would have even heard of him before a surprise rumour emerged.

Sport Bild reported in November that Liverpool had made contact with the representatives of Drewes to try and tee up a 2023 deal.

It was noted at the time that whilst Drewes was out of contract at the end of the season, Sandhausen had a one-year option on his deal.

The 29-year-old has now made a decision on his future and is actually staying at Sandhausen having signed a ‘long-term’ contract.

Sporting director Mikayil Kabaca has now offered his view on the deal, celebrating as Drewes is a ‘leading player and top performer’ for Sandhausen.

This seemingly rules out a move to Liverpool but the Reds may still be in the market for another goalkeeper.

Liverpool could still target another stopper despite Drewes news

The idea behind Liverpool targeting Drewes – a second division player in Germany – was of course never geared towards replacing Alisson.

Liverpool were likely viewing Drewes as a player to feature as second-choice or even third-choice goalkeeper at Anfield.

Caoimhin Kelleher has shown his quality on a number of occasions but may fancy moving on to become a first-choice stopper elsewhere.

Adrian San Miguel offers experienced cover too but he is out of contract again in the summer and it’s unclear whether Liverpool will try to keep him.

Drewes may be a player familiar to Liverpool’s German boss Jurgen Klopp but his decision to stay with Sandhausen leaves the Reds looking elsewhere for a new goalkeeper.
