Liverpool have money to spend after cashing in on Philippe Coutinho, and this has led them to pursue Roma’s Kevin Strootman.

The dynamic Dutch midfielder would be a huge upgrade on Jordan Henderson, and Premium Sport in Italy have reported the Reds have enquired about Strootman’s services.

Strootman has long been linked to Liverpool’s rivals Manchester United, going back to 2013 when he was at PSV.

David Moyes inexplicably snubbed him and moved for Marouane Fellaini instead, and Strootman went onto play like one of the world’s best midfielders before a serious knee injury curtailed his progress.

Prior to this the Standard reported the Italian side to value him at £79 million, and Strootman is getting back to his best – with Manchester United fans taking to Twitter to urge the club to finally sign him just last month.

United need a midfielder with Michael Carrick set to retire and Marouane Fellaini’s contract expiring, but it is Liverpool who are taking more active steps to sign Strootman.

The Merseyside club also have an edge due to having successfully negotiated with Roma for Mohamed Salah last summer, and could tempt the midfielder by uniting him with the Egypt international.

Strootman’s injury history remains a concern to any buyer, but Manchester United fans would not be happy to see the Dutchman rock up at Anfield as a marquee signing this month.
