Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita won’t be signing a new deal with the club unless he plays more regular first-team football under Jurgen Klopp.
That’s according to Bild journalist Christian Falk, who made the claim on the ‘English Week’ segment.
Falk claims that initial talks have been held to extend Keita’s contract with the club.
However, Keita won’t be signing a new deal unless he plays more first-team football according to Falk.
How long is left on Keita’s Liverpool deal?
Keita’s current contract expires in 2023 having signed a five-year deal in 2018.
The Malian midfielder is fast approaching the final 18 months of his contract, at which point his value will decrease.
Liverpool paid £54million to sign Keita, and wouldn’t get anything near that price if his contract runs down.
Keita earns £120,000-a-week at Liverpool according to Spotrac. Whether or not he deserves a pay rise would be up for debate after a mixed time at Anfield.
What has Klopp said about Keita?
After his Liverpool debut, Klopp called Keita a ‘fantastic’ player.
Klopp even suggested that Keita doesn’t know just how good he can become in the future.
Keita has suffered injury problems though, limiting his impact at Liverpool.
With Georginio Wijnaldum gone, Keita has a chance to really nail down a spot in the Liverpool team.
His goal against Crystal Palace last week was superb, and Keita now needs to find some momentum.
