Wolves value Matheus Nunes at ‘more than £50 million’ as Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool continue to keep tabs on the relative Premier League newcomer, according to Sky Sports.

It’s a strange one, this.

Portugal international Nunes is only five months into his Premier League career. He’s started just 12 games so far for Wolverhampton Wanderers. And, barring the odd moment of lung-busting quality, it’s fair to say he’s not exactly taken English football by storm.

Matheus Nunes a target for Liverpool despite slow Wolves start

The Daily Mail, however, insist that Nunes’ rather underwhelming displays have not put off long-time admirers Liverpool.

Klopp’s out-of-sorts side, The Telegraph add, made ‘a commitment’ to bid for the one-time Everton target before his £38 million move to Molineux, and are likely to renew their interest at some point in the near future, albeit in the summer rather than January.

Sky Sports, meanwhile, say that Wolves would hope to make an immediate and sizeable profit, despite Nunes’ lack of genuine impact in Old Gold. The former Sporting Lisbon dynamo is valued in excess of £50 million.

Now, it’s difficult to know how much Nunes’ sluggish adaptation to life on English soil can be attributed to Wolves’ ongoing struggles towards the bottom of the Premier League table. There remains a feeling that Wolves are yet to stumble upon a system or a formation capable of getting the best out of a potentially elite-level central midfielder, one who’s ball-carrying ability and ferocious acceleration had Pep Guardiola labelling him ‘one of the best players in the world’ nearly 12 months ago.

Cheaper than Enzo Fernandez and Jude Bellingham

Nunes’ drive, thrust and vast potential could come in very handy at Liverpool, however. The 2022 Champions League finalists look a mess in the centre of the park at present; both Leicester and Brentford carving through their side like a plump Christmas turkey. Perhaps a squad with more quality can thrive where Wolves have failed; providing a platform for Nunes to really make his mark.

Even at £50 million, Nunes represents an affordable alternative to top targets Enzo Fernandez and Jude Bellinhgam. Both of whom could command fees in the region of £100 million.

But while some would say ‘affordable’, others would say ‘underwhelming’. On current form, Nunes looks a big step down from Liverpool’s more expensive targets.
