Bayern Munich were brushed aside by Liverpool on Tuesday, but Jurgen Klopp’s side could yet be dealt a blow in the transfer market.
Liverpool will return to the Champions League this season, having impressed with a fourth-placed Premier League finish last term.
And while the Reds still have work to do in the transfer market, Mo Salah has already improved a potentially devastating front line.
Salah will combine with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and – hopefully, in Liverpool’s eyes – Philippe Coutinho in the coming season.
Jurgen Klopp’s forwards linked up to glorious effect on Tuesday when Liverpool thrashed Bayern Munich 3-0 at the Allianz Arena – and could have won by a wider margin.
But the Reds boss is reportedly fearful of Coutinho leaving – according to The Sun – as Barcelona continue to be linked to a move for the Brazil international.
After Klopp’s fine, steady work in building a fearless Liverpool side, this would represent a real blow.
Barca are a unique proposition and the Reds may not be able to compete at this stage, but the manager would still hope that performances like that seen against Bayern can display to Coutinho what he might be missing.
Liverpool will surely hold firm with their wish to keep Coutinho, but it may come down to the player’s desire to stay or move.
Those on Merseyside must hope Klopp and his players have shown enough to convince the 25-year-old that his future lies at Anfield.
