Reaction to last night’s 1-0 defeat in the Capital One Cup against Manchester United.
Liverpool were knocked out of the Capital One Cup last night after a 1-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford, thanks to a Javier Hernandez goal just after half time.
Manager Brendan Rodgers thought Liverpool had some good spells in the game but bemoaned the lack of concentration that led to the winning goal.
‘I thought we had good spells in the game where we got into real good areas and probably just the final pass let us down tonight and that final finish, but I’ve no qualms about the players’ effort. I thought they were brilliant in everything they gave to the game.’
On the winning goal, the Liverpool boss said: ‘If you look at the corner you see all the players skin-tight to their markers, no-one was free and then Chicharito gets free far too easily.
‘It’s not good and at the weekend we did a similar thing.
‘As an individual you have to be stronger mentally and have a greater desire not to lose your marker. If you do that there is a greater chance you won’t concede. It is not something we go into straight after the game but it is something they know.’
Luis Suarez returned to the Liverpool side after serving a 10 match ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in last night’s game and told the Liverpool Echo that he will give the team his total commitment after a summer where he tried to force through a move away from the club.
He said: ‘All the time I try my best on the pitch. I’m here to help the team and help Liverpool and I’ll try my best.’
Away from last night’s action, the Liverpool Post is reporting that defender Andre Wisdom thinks that increased competition for places at the club could help him, but he also feels that a loan spell will aid his development.
‘Maybe something will come of the loan option later in the season because you want to be playing games on a regular basis.
‘But for the time being I’m staying at Liverpool and I’m happy about that because hopefully I’ll be getting another chance here and I’m looking forward to trying to take it.’
The same piece also indicated that Martin Skrtel is still being watched by former manager Rafael Benitez as Napoli, with the Italian club reportedly keen to sign the defender on loan in the January transfer window.
