Liverpool want a midfielder and are aiming to sign one in January rather than just wait until summer for an addition to the engine room.

The Reds are struggling to find consistency this season and Jurgen Klopp will want major additions in 2023.

Many have expected Liverpool go for a big midfield signing next summer.

Jude Bellingham is the key target with the England international widely expected to leave Borussia Dortmund.

Yet with no guarantee of signing Bellingham and a long wait ahead, Liverpool may go elsewhere in the January window.

Liverpool want a midfielder

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Klopp is completely secure at Liverpool and will not be sacked, nor will he resign despite a disappointing season so far.

Plettenberg claims that Liverpool want ‘top transfers’ next summer but a central midfielder is being targeted for January.

It’s worth adding here that Plettenberg was the journalist who broke Sadio Mane’s move to Bayern Munich.

Liverpool have major concerns in the middle of the park.

Fabinho looks a shadow of his former self whilst both Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are in their 30’s now.

It’s vital to add new energy to that midfield region and Liverpool have to spend on quality reinforcements.

Fans would absolutely love to see Jude Bellingham arrive in January but that is surely out of the question.

Maybe looking towards midfielders who are heading out of contract in the summer would make sense for Liverpool.

Clubs don’t love to lose quality players for nothing and Liverpool may be able to come in with a bargain offer.

Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans can leave for free at the end of the season and his experience in the Premier League could be what Liverpool are seeking.

Then there is Konrad Laimer at RB Leipzig, a relentless runner who is approaching the end of his deal and could be ideal at covering gaps left by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Lyon’s Houssem Aouar still has great quality even if his shine has dimmed a little in recent years whilst Thomas Lemar still hasn’t signed a new Atletico Madrid deal and was heavily linked to Liverpool in 2018.

We can’t see a huge financial outlay in January, especially if Liverpool want Bellingham, so these out of contract players could be prime targets for the Reds.
