According to The Telegraph, Liverpool are pushing forward with their interest in Wolves’ Matheus Nunes ahead of a potential summer transfer.
Nunes is a player Liverpool have liked for quite some time, and now, it looks as though they’re going to pull the trigger on signing him.
On the surface, this looks like a rather strange transfer. After all, Nunes has struggled since arriving in England with Wolves and his team currently sit nineteenth in the league.
However, we’ve seen this situation play out before with a talented midfielder who has struggled to get to grips with life in England at a smaller club.
Indeed, Javier Mascherano largely went through the same process when he was at West Ham United before Liverpool snapped him up and made him into one of the best defensive midfielders on the planet.
Mascherano, much like Nunes, struggled to adapt to the Premier League early on, and there was almost a feeling around him that he wasn’t suited to playing in a below-par team such as West Ham.
The same has to be said of Nunes. This is a player of immense quality who is playing in a team that lacks any gumption at the moment, he needs to play in a side with a more forward-thinking attitude to show his true colours.
Let’s not forget, Pep Guardiola called Nunes one of the best players in the world at one point, you don’t earn that sort of praise from that manager unless you have something truly special about you.
Of course, Nunes and Mascherano are both completely different as players, but they may well be on the same career trajectory here – struggling at Wolves and West Ham before eventually showing what they are all about in a Liverpool team that suits their abilities.
