Liverpool want Matheus Nunes and it seems that Pepijn Lijnders is playing a key role in a potential move for the Wolverhampton Wanderers ace.

That’s according to The Telegraph, who claim that Lijnders is having an increasing influences on Liverpool’s transfers and plans for the future.

Lijnders is understood to have recommended Nunes to Liverpool last summer, before he left Sporting for Wolves.

Yet it’s noted that Liverpool have an agreement to go back in for Nunes over the summer and a £44million deal is likely to go through in the summer.

After all, Nunes can’t play for a third club this season. He has already turned out for Sporting and Wolves, so no deal will be done this month.

Still, Liverpool look to be pressing ahead with a move for Nunes on Lijnders’ recommendation.

That’s bold given that Nunes hasn’t actually impressed all that much in the Premier League.

The energetic midfielder made a big move from Sporting to Wolves and fans were expecting a game-changer, but it just hasn’t quite happened yet.

Matheus Nunes pursuit shows Lijnders influence at Liverpool

Liverpool and Lijnders must see major potential in Nunes, maybe similar to Georginio Wijnaldum at Newcastle United; a player who maybe didn’t live up to his billing elsewhere but blossomed at Liverpool.

Lijnders is a Dutch coach who was schooled at Portuguese side Porto, and we’re starting to see that influence in Liverpool’s moves.

Just look at Liverpool’s two big moves for 2022. Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez arrived at Anfield, leaving Portuguese clubs Porto and Benfica respectively.

Liverpool’s first big move of 2023 has seen them sign Cody Gakpo, a Dutch winger who was excelling at PSV Eindhoven.

Now it’s Nunes on Liverpool’s wish list, a Portugal international who thrived for Portuguese side Sporting.

That’s a real pattern emerging for Liverpool with Lijnders’ knowledge of the Dutch and Portuguese markets becoming increasingly valued.
