Liverpool want Matheus Nunes and are rivalling Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the race for the Sporting star’s signature.

Liverpool are making quite the habit of shopping in the Portuguese market.

First it was Luis Diaz who made the move from Portugal to Anfield, joining from Porto in January and making a huge impact.

Then it was Darwin Nunez as he made a big-money move from Benfica to Liverpool as Sadio Mane’s replacement.

With Porto and Benfica raided, it may now be time for Sporting to face interest from Liverpool in one of their top players.

Liverpool want Matheus Nunes

Portuguese newspaper Journal de Noticias report that Liverpool are very interested in signing Sporting midfielder Nunes.

It’s stated that whilst Chelsea and Wolves have been interested in Nunes for some time, Liverpool have only recently come forward for him.

No official offer has yet been made but it seems that Liverpool are positioning themselves in the race for Nunes.

Nunes, 23, joined Sporting from Estoril back in 2019 and has now become a quality box-to-box midfielder.

Born in Brazil but now representing Portugal on the international stage, Nunes has bagged seven in 99 appearances for Sporting.

Interest in Nunes is huge and Liverpool may face a real battle from other clubs on top of Wolves and Chelsea.

O Jogo in Portugal reported in June that Everton would like to sign Nunes as their first signing should a Peter Kenyon-led takeover go through.

That now seems unlikely this summer after talks were shelved with Kenyon last week but if a deal can be resurrected, expect Nunes to be a key target.

That takeover being scrapped for now could open the door for Liverpool, but the Reds’ famous foes Manchester City held talks to sign Nunes back in March.

Pep Guardiola hailed Nunes as ‘one of the best players in the world today’ having faced City in the Champions League with Sporting.

Beating Everton and City to a major signing would be so sweet for Liverpool, and with central midfield the only real area where Liverpool could make another signing this summer, Nunes is a name to keep a close eye on.
