Liverpool reportedly wanted Matheus Cunha in January and Atletico Madrid are seemingly ready to offload the Brazilian ace.

The Reds were looking at attacking talent in the January transfer window.

We now know that Liverpool pounced to sign Luis Diaz from Porto in a deal worth up to £49million.

Liverpool seemingly brought forward their plans to sign Diaz in order to avoid losing him to Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool did seemingly have alternative targets in mind though and one of them is becoming available again.

Liverpool reportedly wanted Matheus Cunha

Spanish newspaper AS claimed that the Reds made a bid for Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha.

Cunha was allegedly tempted by the move to Anfield but Diego Simeone chose to keep him with Atletico.

Fast forward a few months and Cunha is probably wishing that move to Liverpool materialised.

Cunha has started just two games for Atletico this season and has yet to score in La Liga in what has been a dismal campaign.

Marca reported earlier this month that Cunha is now available for transfer once again, less than 18 months since trading Hertha Berlin for Atletico.

Liverpool now seemingly have another chance to land Cunha – but is it one they should take?

Cunha is a very good presser and would seemingly fit into Jurgen Klopp’s style of play.

Cunha has been schooled at a Red Bull club in RB Leipzig, which is something Liverpool seem to value and he also has great versatility to play across the front line and even as a false nine – a position Liverpool need to think about amid questions over Roberto Firmino’s future.

The 23-year-old still has plenty of untapped potential and frankly seems to be a much better fit for Klopp’s style of play than Simeone’s.

Cunha may not set pulses racing for Liverpool fans based on his Atletico spell but Liverpool clearly liked him enough to target him as an alternative to Diaz.

Cunha’s availability will surely be of interest to Liverpool again now and he could be exactly the kind of player Klopp can get back on track.
