Liverpool and Manchester United are both watching John McGinn with intent – but Aston Villa now want to give him a new contract to stay.
That’s according to The Sunday Mirror (13/02, p74) claim that Villa are ready to offer McGinn a brand new contract to stay at Villa Park.
McGinn still has more than three years left to run on his current deal but Villa are desperate to give the Scot renewed terms.
That would take McGinn into the upper echelons of Villa’s earners, potentially fending off United and Villa in the process.
It’s stated that Liverpool and United have both been watching McGinn ahead of making a move for the Scot at the end of the season or down the line.
Villa obviously don’t want to lose McGinn and are ready to take steps to prevent being raided.
Liverpool didn’t replace Georginio Wijnaldum last summer and may move to bring in another hard-working midfielder this summer to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s side.
United are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements and McGinn may fit the bill in terms of a player to bring energy to their engine room.
McGinn has been hailed as ‘absolutely incredible’ by Micah Richards, and continues to produce impressive displays for Villa.

The interested clubs have to consider how much they would want to pay for McGinn even before any new deal.
McGinn turns 28 later this year, and with Villa under no pressure to sell given the Scot’s contract situation, the price may be exorbitant.
£50million has been spoken about over McGinn, and as good as he is, that price tag may not appeal given the younger midfielders who can be signed for less.
With Villa now targeting a new deal, it looks like McGinn will be staying with Steven Gerrard’s men for a while yet.
