Liverpool are trailing Premier League rivals Manchester City in the race to secure the signing of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in 2022.
That’s according to the Daily Star, who claim that the battle for Nunez’s signature is now on after a great start to the season.
As things stand, it’s suggested that City believe they are leading the race ahead of Liverpool, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
Nunez on fire this season
Uruguayan hitman Nunez joined Benfica from Spanish side Almeria in 2020, and has emerged as one of the top young strikers in Europe.
The 22-year-old hit 14 goals and 12 assists in all competitions last season, showing his quality as an all-round striker.
This term, Nunez has already bagged six goals in seven games, including a brace against Barcelona in midweek.
Nunez looks to be taking his game to another level this season, so interest in his signature is no shock.
Boss Jorge Jesus thinks Nunez will be a ‘world class’ striker, and the race for his signature is on.

Manchester City could beat Liverpool to Nunez
It’s now suggested that City are leading the race for Nunez.
City need to find a new striker. Sergio Aguero has gone and a deal for Harry Kane failed to materialise over the summer.
Nunez could be City’s man, likely coming at a much cheaper price than Kane whilst also being much younger.
Nunez has a £125million release clause in his deal, but City think they can sign him for £70million thanks to their relationship with Benfica.
Liverpool remain a threat given that they need to find more attacking firepower, with Nunez more of a classic centre forward than their current options.
Liverpool will hope to beat City in the Premier League today, but they could miss out on Nunez.
