Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp provides update on Emre Can’s contract situation

Emre Can has entered the final year of his Anfield contract.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed his frustration over the contract stand off between the club and Emre can, saying it is “not too cool”. However, he still believes that a solution can be reached.

Can, who joined Liverpool in 2014 from Bayer Leverkusen, has entered the final 12 months of his current deal. His representatives have long been in talks with the Anfield club over an extension, but he is yet to sign a new deal.

Serie A champions Juventus have been repeatedly linked with a move, according to The Times, for the 23-year-old midfielder, and as a result there remains concern over Can’s long term future at Merseyside.

Klopp has made it clear that the player won’t be sold this summer, and insists that the midfielder wants to stay.

It has been reported for a while that Liverpool would prefer Can to see out his contract than sell this summer, and Klopp echoes that sentiment as well.

The Liverpool manager has hailed Can as an important player who can play in different positions. Klopp admits that the situation is not perfect, but he is hopeful that a right solution can be reached.

“We are still in talks,” Klopp, the Liverpool manager, said about the situation with Can, as quoted by The Times.

“Do I think it is too cool that we didn’t fix it so far? No, to be honest. But it is all OK at the moment and we have to take it like this. His mind is not elsewhere. It is an important contract for him at his age.

“I am 100 per cent sure that we don’t sell the player now in this situation. He will play here for the next year, that is for sure. All the rest we have to see.

“Last year, there was no real readiness for negotiations but this year we have talked. We want him and he also wants to stay. It is about a few little details.

“It’s not about having to make a decision about bringing in another player in the same position, the same size, the same skills.

“Emre has really improved in a lot of parts and is a really important player for us, he can play different positions.

“The situation is not perfect, I would prefer that he has already signed. But I am still positive that we can find the right solution.”
