Liverpool claimed their sixth European crown in June by beating Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.
Jurgen Klopp hailed Tottenham Hotspur’s Mauricio Pochettino as an ‘incredible’ manager after the Liverpool man was named FIFA’s men’s coach of the year on Monday night.
The Reds beat their fellow Premier League rivals Tottenham in the Champions League final in June, with Klopp also guiding his team to second place in England’s top-flight last season.
Klopp ended up edging out both Pochettino and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who won the domestic treble, to the main managerial award.
During his speech, Klopp had this classy message for both Pochettino and Guardiola, as he was no doubt grateful in picking up the award.
This is what Klopp said, as posted by Liverpool’s official Twitter account: “It’s quite heavy. What can I say? I have to say thank you to a lot of people and perhaps I need to start at the beginning with my family. Nobody would have expected it 20 years ago, 10 years ago or five years ago and how close it can be.
“Mauricio [Pochettino], we won that game [Champions League final] that’s why I am here and not you. That’s how football is but we all know what an incredible job you did, what an incredible job Pep [Guardiola] did and what so many coaches did.”
Klopp will be hoping to win the award again next season because if he does then it’ll mean that he and his team have been successful once again.
Whilst Liverpool will no doubt push to defend their European crown, they will also be very keen on winning the Premier League title, as they currently sit top of the table after six games.
It seems as though that the fight for England’s top crown will once again be between current champions City and Liverpool, with five points separating them, at this moment in time.
