Tottenham Hotspur missed out on signing Luis Diaz in January – because Liverpool’s add-ons were seen as more realistic by Porto.

Tottenham made their move for Diaz in January, but a £37.6million bid from Spurs was rejected by the Portuguese league leaders.

By the time Tottenham could put together another bid, Liverpool had swooped in to secure his signature.

The Athletic now report that Diaz was the main attacking signing Jurgen Klopp wanted this summer.

With Tottenham making their move for Diaz, Liverpool simply had to accelerate their move and make sure they didn’t miss out.

But just how did Liverpool manage to lodge a bid that Porto preferred to Tottenham’s?

That Athletic report states that Tottenham were increasingly confident of a deal but add-ons ended up being the problem.

Liverpool put forward add-ons based on appearances and, crucially, trophies. Their add-ons were see as being more realistic than Tottenham’s.

Diaz also made it clear that he wanted Liverpool over Tottenham, with the quick turn of events leaving Tottenham absolutely rocked.

The Colombian has proven to be a superstar for Liverpool, contributing three goals and one assist in 14 appearances for the Reds.

Diaz looks to have made the right choice in joining Liverpool and Tottenham may actually not be all that disappointed with how things have turned out.

Tottenham moved on to sign Dejan Kulusevski after missing out on Diaz, and he’s having just as big of an impact as Liverpool’s new man.

Kulusevski has proven to be the perfect complement to Son Heung-min and Harry Kane, with Tottenham hardly short-changed.

Liverpool are still the big winners though, and pushing that extra mile for Diaz made sure their top target didn’t end up in North London.
