Liverpool need to axe a player from their Premier League squad to make room for Luis Diaz – and it looks likely to be goalkeeper Loris Karius.
That’s according to the Liverpool Echo, who claim that Jurgen Klopp is likely to ditch Karius from the Liverpool squad.
Liverpool secured the signing of winger Diaz on Sunday, striking a £49million deal to snap him up from Porto.
That’s an exciting signing for Liverpool, but it now means Klopp has to tinker with his 25-man Premier League squad.
Whilst Nat Phillips and Neco Williams have respectively joined Bournemouth and Fulham on loan, they count as homegrown players.
Premier League clubs can’t name more than 17 non-homegrown players in their Premier League squad, so their departures have no impact on reducing numbers.
Liverpool need to axe a non-homegrown player to make room for Diaz, and it’s unsurprisingly looking like being Karius.
The goalkeeper hasn’t played a single game for Liverpool since his disastrous night in the Champions League final against Real Madrid in 2018.
Loan spells to Besiktas and Union Berlin haven’t helped Karius get back on track and ultimately haven’t held him land a permanent exit.

The 28-year-old clearly has no future at Liverpool and he will be released when his Reds contract ends this summer.
It was almost a surprise that Karius was even registered in the first place, and he will now seemingly be axed to bring in Diaz.
If this was the plan, it’s a shame Karius didn’t leave in January to try and play first-team games elsewhere.
The way his career has gone in recent years is a real shame, and his imminent decision is the final sign that Karius needs to move on from Liverpool.
