Liverpool’s transfer window hasn’t been all that exciting so far.
The Reds’ only signing so far this summer has been Ibrahima Konate, and while there’s an argument to be made that the Merseyside club need a midfielder to compensate for losing Georginio Wijnaldum, these things can’t be rushed.
Liverpool have had a look at a number of midfielders, and towards the end of last season, Liverpool were strongly linked with a move for Sheffield United’s Sander Berge.
Reports stated that Klopp was absolutely convinced by the Norwegian and that the German believes the Blades’ midfielder would be perfect for Liverpool.
It looks as though Liverpool have opted against this move, rumours have died down and the trail has gone cold, and after just two games in the Championship, it looks like a wise move.
Berge arrived in England with a lot of hype, but as of yet, he’s failed to live up to expectations.
He missed most of last season due to injury as Sheffield United went down with a whimper, and when he did play, he flattered to deceive. Nobody can question that he was physically dominant and he played with a lot of energy, but he made very little actually happen on the pitch.
Many thought that a drop down to the Championship would see Berge dominate, but two games in he’s looking very ordinary.
Now, Berge has been trying to take games by the scruff of the neck in the way many expected him to. He makes 2.5 key passes per game and attempts three dribbles per game, but once again, he’s proving to be a player that is very much style over substance.
Indeed, while these passes and runs may look good, they’re not coming to anything – no player in the league has been dispossessed more often than Berge, and despite having the so-called ‘Rolls Royce’ as their creative hub, the Blades remain the only team yet to score a goal in the Championship.
It’s hard to imagine how he’d have fit into this Liverpool midfield, and while Klopp was an admirer, there seems to be serious holes in his game.
Berge has undoubtedly got potential, his attributes speak for themselves. He’s strong, fast and competent on the ball, but right now, he’s far from the finished article, and with Liverpool desperate to wrestle their Premier League title back from Manchester City this term, they can’t be wasting time and money on a player like that.
Luckily, with Michael Edwards at the helm, Liverpool no longer rush into these types of deals, and for one reason or another, the Reds have gone cold on Berge, and that may end up being a very wise decision after his mediocre start to life in the Championship.
