Newcastle United reportedly wanted to sign Liverpool midfielder James Milner last summer.
Liverpool have one midfield arriving this summer, but that may not stop Jurgen Klopp from pursuing another player to boost his options in the middle of the park.
RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita will finally complete his move to Anfield this summer having agreed his move back in August, and the Guinean will almost certainly be a key player for the Reds.
However, with Emre Can set to move on when his contract expires at the end of the season, other midfielders are being linked with moves to join Liverpool as a replacement this summer.
The Mirror believe Liverpool want to sign Jorginho from Napoli in a deal worth around £50million, and that may just force some other Reds midfielders to consider their futures under Klopp.
One such player is James Milner, whose first-team football chances may be diminished if Jorginho arrives, given that Klopp also has Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at his disposal, as well as the inbound Keita.
Milner, 32, may want first-team football next season before heading into the final few years of his career, and a move back to former club Newcastle United would make some sense.
The Independent reported in October that Newcastle attempted to re-sign Milner last summer, but with Liverpool unwilling to let him go for free, the move fell apart.
Milner, who made 136 appearances for Newcastle following a 2004 move from Leeds United, would bring an experienced head to Rafael Benitez’s side, whilst also giving him a proven Premier League midfielder with major versatility to build around.
Benitez would need backing from Mike Ashley to secure a deal, which he may be reluctant to do given Milner’s age, but if Liverpool do land Jorginho, Newcastle should make another move for their former player and offer him guaranteed playing time back at St James’ Park.
