Liverpool and Tottenham are in direct competition for the Premier League title this season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur squad is so finely balanced that he chose not to sign any new players in the summer, but if one goes, a replacement will be required – and Liverpool could be tempted to land one of their stars.
The Sun claimed this week that Spurs could be willing to sell powerhouse midfielder Victor Wanyama, with the 27-year-old star falling down the pecking order in north London this season.
An injury-strewn spell last season saw the combination of Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele become first choice, while the reemergence of Harry Winks this season leaves former Celtic and Southampton man Wanyama in fourth.
Now, he has only managed 57 minutes of Premier League football so far this season, as he struggles to break past the likes of Dembele and Winks into Pochettino’s starting eleven.
With Wanyama seemingly on the chopping block, it is likely that Spurs will be willing to offload the midfielder for less than the £50million price tag the Daily Mail claimed Spurs had slapped on the Kenya captain’s head earlier this year.
If available at a cheaper price, then Liverpool could reignite their interest in the midfielder after Daily Mail claimed earlier this year that Jurgen Klopp’s side wanted to sign the Spurs star.
With Klopp seemingly a fan of Wanyama, he could now be tempted after the latest report to move for Wanyama and bolster his midfield as the Merseyside club look to mount a Premier League title challenge.
Wanyama does have three years remaining on his contract in north London, which Spotrac claims to be worth just £26,000 a week. Losing Wanyama would not be a significant blow, but he might come back to haunt Spurs if he were to join Liverpool.
