Liverpool legends Steven Gerrard and Steve McManaman deliver verdict on Andy Carroll England recall

West Ham United star Andy Carroll is in superb form at the moment and two Liverpool legends have had their say on a potential England recall.

Carroll’s brace helped secure a 3-0 win over Middlesbrough last time out and his brilliant bicycle kick in a 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace the week before looks certain to be one of the goals of the season.

His fourth goal in six games was not as significant as his run of games without injury.

And as is always the case when the injury prone former Liverpool striker gets a run of games and goals under his belt so comes the inevitable talk of an England recall.

While the big Geordie insisted in an interview with the Independent that he is simply focusing on playing well for West Ham, he did admit he still hopes to play for the national side again.

And speaking on BT Sport after his weekend brace, Anfield legends Steven Gerrard and Steve McManaman delivered their verdicts on his chances.

“Big fan,” Gerrard told BT Sport of his former Liverpool and England teammate.

“I think he’s a great option to have as a teammate and also as an England fan. I think when things are not going well for England, why not have a big target man who is powerful who can come off the bench and have a big impact.

“He’s in incredible form, I think he’s had terrible luck with injuries over the years. If he can stay healthy and fit he’s going to be a handful for any defender in the world.

“(Should he be recalled for England?) 100%, 100%.”

And McManaman agreed, adding: “It was amazing to see him run, attack and climb above everybody and then for the second goal he gets the ball one side of the pitch and sprays it to the other side, it shows what a wonderful footballer he is.”

After shaking off a whiplash injury to play at Boro’ Carroll was then withdrawn after an hour with a tight groin.

Bilic said it was more a precaution than anything and Carroll now has an extended period of rest with West Ham not back in action until next Wednesday.
