Liverpool paid a world record fee for a goalkeeper when signing Alisson from Roma earlier this month.
Liverpool legend Steve McManaman sat down for an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, and raved about Jürgen Klopp’s transfer business thus far, singling out Alisson Becker as a key addition to the Reds’ squad.
Many expect Liverpool to mount a sustained push for major honours this season, with Klopp having spent close to £180 million on the signings of Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alisson Becker and Xherdan Shaqiri so far this summer.
The Merseyside outfit finished 25 points adrift of Premier League champions Manchester City last season, so they have an awful lot of ground to make up this time around, if they are to usurp Pep Guardiola’s men.
McManaman, who made 367 appearances for Liverpool, raved about his former club’s transfer business, predicting that Brazilian stopper Alisson will save them between 10-15 points this season, as quoted by the Daily Mail:
“Signing Alisson smashed the record for a goalkeeper but players are worth what they are worth now, that’s just the value of good players, if you want the best you pay good money. Alisson is considered one of the best, so he’s worth it. Was Virgil van Dijk worth £75m? If you ask Liverpool fans the answer is yes and you just hope the goalkeeper is the same. You’re hoping this cloud over Liverpool about the goalkeepers will disappear now, he could save the team 10-15 points a season because of how good he is. I think it was the key piece of the puzzle for Liverpool, we’ve been talking about the goalkeeper for many years, I think Jurgen appreciates that as well.”
If the 46-year-old is proven right, and Alisson does in fact save his club more than 10 points this season, it would be hard to make a case against Liverpool winning their first league title since 1990.
