Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes Brighton and Hove Albion boss Roberto de Zerbi would be the ‘perfect’ replacement if Jurgen Klopp leaves the Premier League giants.
While Jurgen Klopp’s representative quickly shut down rumours suggesting he could be tempted to take over from the sacked Hansi Flick ahead of Germany’s own European Championships – speaking to ARD Sportschau – speculation about the long-serving Liverpool boss has Danny Murphy wondering what the future could look like in the Anfield dugout.
And the 2001 FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup winner cannot see anyone better suited to inheriting Klopp’s throne than a man who’s exhilarating Brighton side went unbeaten against Liverpool last term, hammering the Merseyside giants 8-4 on aggregate across three meetings.

Could Roberto de Zerbi be Liverpool’s next manager?
“I’ve got the answer, so I’m not worried about (Klopp leaving),” Murphy tells talkSPORT (13 September, 12pm). I think De Zerbi is perfect. He’ll be ready then (to take over).
“I think he plays great football, he looks a strong character, he’s learning his trade in this league with Brighton and doing it superbly well.
“I don’t see a better candidate.”
A favourite among footballing hipsters ever since his time at Sassuolo – Pep Guardiola one of many long-time admirers – De Zerbi has brought his unique brand of crash and bang attacking football into the mainstream at Brighton; building upon the foundations laid down by Graham Potter at The Amex.
‘The real deal’
“Things change in football really quickly. So flavour of the month might be someone else this time next year. But I think he’s the real deal,” Murphy adds.

“There is something about him. After meeting him as well, (I can say) he’s got real gravitas. A real presence. And I love the way his teams play.
“But I cant see Klopp going for some time yet. He’s got this new influx of players, and he seems enthused by Liverpool’s start (to the season) and the promising start of some of the new signings.”
