The Reds ace often locked horns with the Red Devils forward but the former was happy to see his compatriot given such a major gig at Old Trafford.

Former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise has posted a good luck message about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the latter was named interim Manchester United manager.
The retired striker spent 11 seasons at Old Trafford, scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final, and was named as Jose Mourinho’s successor on Wednesday, having previously managed in the Premier League with Cardiff.
Solskjaer and Riise have shared history, the two of them contesting the fierce clash between Liverpool and Man United between 2001 and 2007, as well as playing together for the Norway national team.
Despite the rivalry between the two at club level, Riise was nonetheless delighted to see his fellow countryman be given the Red Devils job, temporarily leaving the hotseat at parent club Molde to take the reins at Liverpool’s big rivals.
Indeed, the 38-year-old – who hails from the city whose club Solskjaer manages permanently – has described the appointment as “insane”, taking to Twitter to pen a long message of support for his compatriot:
Riise spent eight years at Liverpool, joining the club from Monaco in 2001 and departing for Roma in 2008, and made 348 appearances for the Reds, scoring 31 goals and registering 13 assists, according to Transfermarkt.
