Joel Matip moved to Liverpool this summer on a free transfer.
Reds legend Ray Houghton has explained how his former club’s signing of Joel Matip was a no-brainer for Jürgen Klopp, as quote day the club’s official website.
The Cameroon international has slotted in to the Liverpool side seamlessly, playing eight of his side’s 10 Premier League games so far this season, and has become an instant favourite with the fans with a succession of fully-committed displays.

Houghton, who made 205 appearances for the Merseyside giants, sat down for an interview with liverpoolfc.com, and responded to a question regarding the signing of the 25-year-old former Schalke man:
“He didn’t cost anything. It was an easy decision for the manager, he knew the player, he knew the league. He’s settled down really well.”
Despite the Reds’ struggles of late in the defensive department, Matip’s presence has certainly given his side a more physical presence from set-pieces, at both ends of the pitch.

Liverpool are now entering a crucial period of their campaign, with their next six league games coming against teams all outside the top-six.
Their chances of winning the premier League title will be heavily dependent on their points return from those six games, and if they could achieve at least 15 points, they could find themselves in an extremely strong position heading into the Christmas period.
