Up to 20 Liverpool players will be on international duty this week with World Cup qualifiers getting into full flow and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping they all return fully fit after seeing his team run thin on the ground by injuries and poor transfer dealings. Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson are on England duty whilst Joe Allen competes for Wales against Belgium and Serbia. Fabio Borini is involved in the Italian squad; Martin Skrtel takes on minnows Liechtenstein and Luxembourg for Slovakia while Daniel Agger will surely start for Denmark. Pepe Reina travels with Spain to Georgia but is unlikely to play with Nuri Sahin likely to play for Turkey.
Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates both travel to South America with Uruguay and Brad Jones will represent Australia against Lebanon and Jordan. Oussama Assaidi takes on Mozambique with Morocco in an African Nations Cup qualifier.
Meanwhile Martin Kelly, Jordan Henderson, Jonjo Shelvey, Danny Wilson and Peter Gulacsi play Under-21 qualifiers with their respective nations of England, Scotland and Hungary. Adam Morgan and Raheem Sterling will compete against fellow young Red Samed Yesil at Under 19 level as England face Germany.
It has been reported today that Liverpool may have the right to exercise a callback for Andy Carroll from West Ham. Liverpool have left themselves embarrassingly short in striking options for the current campaign after missing out on Clint Dempsey but it appears they will be able to recall the England international in January, however West Ham hope that will not happen with David Gold insisting he will stay till the summer and are even reported to have called in lawyers.
Michael Owen will not be signing for Liverpool as a free agent for the upcoming season. The Independent report that despite an interest in bringing in a free transfer Brendan Rodgers did not feel Owen was his best option with his age and fitness concerns the main reasons against a potential one year deal and the former Real Madrid and Manchester United man has now completed a deal to Stoke City.
The Metro reports that Liverpool are instead holding out for the possibility of bringing Didier Drogba to the club as his contract situation with Shanghai Shenhua becomes increasingly fragile. They are believed to have much competition for the former Chelsea star with Real Madrid, West Ham and countless teams in France including Paris Saint Germain interested in signing him but team-mate Nicolas Anleka could return to the club he had a loan spell with in 2002.
Meanwhile former midfielder Raul Meireles may have annoyed his former Anfield fans as he referred to Fenerbahce as a club ‘as big as Liverpool’. The Portuguese claimed the Turkish side was as big as the Merseyside outfit and former side Chelsea when asked if his move to Turkey was a step backward in his career. The Turks have never won the European Cup.
