News and gossip from Liverpool FC in the past 24 hours.

Liverpool appear ready to fast track German youth international Samed Yesil into the first team picture ahead of their Europa League tie with BSC Young Boys Bern. Signed on the eve of transfer deadline day for a fee reported to be in the region of £1million the 18-year-old striker is set to be Brendan Rodgers newest answer to a striker crisis at the club. The German youngster was signed from Bayer Leverkusen with one eye on the future but now, after impressing with a brace and assist during a 3-1 win over England Under-19s he is being tipped to follow the path trailed by Raheem Sterling into the Liverpool first team.

It has emerged that Liverpool seriously considered a move for former striker Fernando Torres prior to this summer. The £50million signing for Chelsea was unhappy at the end of the last campaign after admitting he felt nothing when the team won the Champions League after a fruitless season that saw him on the bench for large swathes of the campaign. Damien Comolli pursued a potentially shell-shocking reunification but it never materialised due to his sacking in April.

Everton FC held a moving tribute to the 96 lives tragically lost at the Hillsborough disaster 23 years ago before they face off with Newcastle in Monday Night’s Premier League clash. A photo collage was emblazoned on the megascreen at Goodison Park while two mascots, a boy and a girl, stood in the centre circle holding hands with 9 and 6 on their backs as a tribute to the lost lives. As the two children shivered in the brisk Merseyside weather The Hollies song He Aint Heavy was blared out across a raucously respectful and emotive stadium, which contained Hillsborough parents Trevor Hicks and Margaret Aspinall.

Leighton Baines dedicated his goal to the continued struggle for closure, his father survived the tragedy.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar is expected to become a transfer target for Brendan Rodgers come January after revealing he may leave Schalke 04. He revealed he is in absolutely no rush to sign a new deal at the Gelsenkirchen side despite his current contract running to its expiry at the end of the current campaign. The Dutch international was the Bundelsiga’s top goalscorer last term. Netting 29 times and insists he will wait and make sure he makes the decision that is right for him. Like fellow Dutchman Robin Van Persie he is 29 years old and his age, combined with contract situation could make him a bargain buy come January.

And finally, we ask what would constitute success for Liverpool this season, and whether simply finishing above Everton is enough, while also taking a look at the Spanish striker who could solve the club’s striking problems.
