Brendan Rodgers believes the lack of recognised strikers at Anfield after a poorly planned Transfer Window could be of huge advantage to some of their young players in particular Spanish hot prospect Suso. The youngster who has been tipped for great things by former boss Rafa Benitez is expected to get his shot with the first team in the coming months. He impressed on Liverpool’s United States tour this summer as well as for Spain’s Under 19 side. Rodgers admitted he may be used in the Premier League as his squad is short on numbers whilst other players such as Adam Morgan and Samed Yesil should aim for a first team shout as well.
Meanwhile Brendan Rodgers has insisted his players need to man up in the face of a small squad and competing on 4 fronts this season. He believes each player may have to occasionally play through a pain barrier for the club with niggling injuries to be ignored in order to fulfil loft expectations. He also defended his decision to trim the squad, which he claims was bloated and overpaid. Several of the wage deals were ‘astronomical’ for players he had little to desire to use. He also maintains his desire to introduce his passing game at the club, vowing that the poor start to the season, the worst in Liverpool’s Premier League history is all part of the dirty work, a means to an end in his quest for tika-taka football at Anfield.
Liverpool’s Jonjo Shelvey was the star of the show for England Under-21s last night as they defeated Azerbaijan 2-0 in Baku to help their push for the UEFA Under-21 Championships. The former Charlton midfielder laid the ball on a plate for Tottenham’s Steven Caulker to head England into an early lead with an expertly whipped in free-kick from the left. He then added England’s second 7 minutes from time by latching onto Connor Wickham’s nodded through pass and firing home a ferocious volley to despatch of their Azeri opponents with a 2-1 victory. Such a performance for the Three Lions may help Jonjo chase an England career rather than accepting a call-up from Scotland.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby has praised Anfield newboy Joe Allen as ‘Barcelona like’ and believes he can become a legendary playmaker on Merseyside. The Dane was a vital part of some of Liverpool’s previously excellent passing teams and believes the Welshman can become a similar influence on Brendan Rodgers new look side.
