All the news from Liverpool FC on the day new reports are released regarding the death of 96 supporters in the Hillsborough disaster 23 years ago.
The dominant story on the Liverpool landscape involves the releasing of previously undisclosed papers relating to the tragic occurrences at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium on April 15th 1989 and here are some of the biggest flashpoints from this day of justice for the loved ones of the 96 taken away that fateful day and the fans of Liverpool football club.
David Cameron apologised profusely offering his condolences on more than one occasion on behalf of his party and the entire country for letting those involved in the events of that day down for 23 years. Ed Milliband of Labour was also quick to offer his sincere apologies on behalf of the Labour party for their failings in a proper inquiry being held after the initial Taylor report did not answer all the questions involved.
The report was damning on South Yorkshire Police, not only for their poor standard of care on the day but also for the apparent smear campaign set up almost immediately that aimed to blame Liverpool fans for the tragic events. Fake stories and lies were leaked to British media about drunk hooligans being behind the trouble; tales that have now been finally confirmed as fabricated as part of a massive cover-up.
116 of the 164 police statements were ‘amended to remove or alter comments unfavourable to SYP’ which has incensed the football community.
The Sun newspaper was also widely criticised for its decision to run parts of the story in their newspaper.
Many messages of support for the reports release and findings came from far and wide with part owner Tom Werner, Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard, who lost his cousin Jon-Paul Gilhooley in the disaster, all announcing there satisfaction at the family and club receiving a remnant of justice from the latest developments.
Liverpool fan and Mirror journalist Brian Reade was trending on Twitter earlier today after his story and take on ‘the day that changed football forever’ hit an emotional chord with the general and footballing public. He was at Hillsborough on the day of the disaster and the article received wide acclaim for its frank and passionate style.
On a day when remembrance is obviously key and other news barely significant here is a brief summary of other stories at Liverpool FC as they chase Argentine starlet Luciano Vietto. They aim to beat Juventus for the 18 year olds signature from Racing Club. Meanwhile Glen Johnson is furious over the red card shown to Steven Gerrard against Ukraine and John Barnes has warned of expecting too much of Raheem Sterling too soon.
What are your thoughts on everything and anything happening at Liverpool FC on the 12th September 2012?
Any messages of support for the cause of Justice for the 96 is of course welcome.
