Raheem Sterling has been included in the England squad for the game against Ukraine. The 17-year-old has been called in as cover after the withdrawal of Theo Walcott and worries over the fitness of Daniel Sturridge. Along with Adam Lallana and Jake Livermore he has been asked to report for duty with Roy Hodgson’s squad ahead of the tie this Tuesday at Wembley. Brendan Rodgers will unlikely be impressed as he previously made it clear he did not want the teenager included in the Under-21 squad to guard him from too steep a developmental curve. It is believed Sterling’s Jamaican heritage played a part in the decision to call him up as the Caribbean country were reportedly gearing up to invite him to their senior squad imminently.
Steven Gerrard however believes the youngster is ready to make the step up to the England team and has his full backing in the squad. The England captain believes the decision to call him up is inspired by Roy Hodgson as it will allow him the opportunity to mingle with even more experienced and successful players. Despite believing it is unlikely he will play the experience alone is worth a lot for England and Liverpool.
In the week of the official unveiling of a new report into the tragic Hillsborough disaster it has been announced that David Cameron will express regret over the 1989 incident. The tragedy, which claimed 96 lives, is still one of the darkest days in sport and policing history. The strategy of the police on the day is believed to be being brought into question and as the Tories were in government at the time much blame has been attributed to them, with Hillsborough a potential consequence of a massive crackdown on hooliganism at football stadiums. Downing Street stopped short of announcing whether a full apology would be issued.
Meanwhile it has been announced that Liverpool as a city will mark the release of the new inquiry by remembering those lost. A two minute silence will be held at 3.06pm across the city in memory of the 96 people who unfortunately and tragically lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster.
Liverpool are concerned over the fitness of Welsh midfielder Joe Allen after he picked up a virus whilst in international duty. This summer’s signing from Swansea is touch and go for Wales game Serbia this Tuesday. Chris Coleman insists his fitness will be dealt with carefully and that the WFA will co-operate with Liverpool’s medical staff to make sure Joe’s club football is not compromised.
